Are Your Kids Hooked On Zoo Mania?

If you’ve got young kids in school, you may have heard the term “squishy” floating around.  Are they talking in some kind of secret code?  Hopefully they’re not talking about that bug on the basement floor or the way your belly feels to them!  So what exactly is a squishy and how much do your kids know about them?  Do they have zoo mania?

Well, ease your mind, because a squishy is just a term for pencil toppers that are all the latest craze in schools across the US.  I was first introduced to squishies when my kids begged me to take them to the local pizza joint, but it was NOT to eat pizza!  That restaurant had a vending machine filled with the little squishies, as they called them.  There were Zoo Mania, Zoo Mania 2, Jungle Mania, and Sea Mania creatures in tiny 1″ plastic containers.  I think they spent about three or four dollars each just trying to get a variety of the squishy pencil toppers.

But the squishy mania didn’t stop there.  Occasionally they would get a “rare” one.  These are really what they were after.  In their quest for the rare zoo mania or rare sea mania squishies, they ended up with quadruplets of just about every other squishy!  Of course, I lectured them about how this was a complete waste of money, but in order to compete with their friends about who had the most and the rarest squishies, they just wouldn’t stop.

So I started looking into a better way to buy squishies.  With their allowance money dwindling away or gone, they got frustrated that they couldn’t get just the squishies that they wanted.  By this time the trading factor had worn off, and it just wasn’t worth spending their life savings just to get the next rare squishy.
