Collecting autographed memorabilia
Collecting Autographed Memorabilia
Why do we find it so fascinating to collect memorabilia and artifacts from vintage movies?
Because it takes us back to days gone by, when life was simpler and so many of the movies of that day have become classics. We create a special bond with a movie or a character when we acquire a piece of movie memorabilia, especially if it’s an autographed photo of your favorite movie star or sports legend.
If you collect autographs, make sure you get them from a reputable source, preferably from a dealer you know. If they aren’t authentic, then they are basically worthless. You wouldn’t want to pass a fake on to someone else, even if you were fooled by one. As you deal with more collectors, you will learn which dealers to trust and which to avoid.
When we collect autographs, be they signed photos, books, documents or artifacts, it gives us a feeling that’s hard to convey to non-collectors. It’s a feeling of excitement at finding a key to the past, and the pastime is very satisfying. Handwritten communication is so rare today, that it’s also a bond to the past, to a simpler day and time.
If you finally find one of the most special autographs to you, or one of the vintage movie posters that you’ve looked for the longest, it’s like you are throwing open a window to the past, and it helps you to understand an event or a person or a time that has become important to you. And you feel closer to that person, that place or that time, when you hold a piece of it in your hands. You can almost feel the emotions of the person on that day long past.
