Buying Your First Sword

Whether you’re looking for an interesting decoration to hang above your fireplace or you love the idea of staging authentic battle reenactments, choosing the perfect sword isn’t always easy. There are many different types of swords and if you really want to narrow down your options and get the most out of your purchase, you’ll need to consider several important elements. Function, cost and style should all factor into your final decision, especially if this is your first time buying a sword.

There are three main types of swords: decorative, battle-ready and combat. Each serves a unique purpose, so you’ll have to figure out which function fits you best. If you simply enjoy the unique visual appeal of swords, but you don’t ever plan on using one as a weapon, then a decorative sword will probably be best suited for you. In general, decorative swords can start at about $10, with the most expensive costing around $300. So if you don’t have much of a budget, you’ll still have plenty of choices. If you are looking for a sword that will function as more than decoration, you should consider getting a battle-ready sword. These swords still possess all of the intricate details of a decorative sword, but they are made of durable materials, usually carbon steel, so they function as a weapon. They are not immune to damage, however. If used frequently they require a significant amount of upkeep and repair. Battle-ready swords generally start at about $100. If aesthetics aren’t a concern for you and you would rather have a more durable weapon, then you should probably invest in a combat sword. They appear much thicker and overall less polished than battle-ready swords, but they are far more resistant to damage, even when used on a regular basis. In general, they will require less repairs and less upkeep. Similar to battle-ready swords, combat swords start at about $100.

After you’ve narrowed down the sword type that suits your needs best, you’ll need to consider both quality and style. Higher quality swords offer more details and are constructed from stronger materials. In general, that means they will cost more money. So if you’re on a budget, you may want to save up before plunking down cash on a sub par sword. This is especially true for battle-ready and combat swords. Choosing the best style for you is a matter of personal taste. Consider your interests, whether they be anime or medieval, and choose a sword that reflects you as a person. Just remember to do plenty of research and shopping around before you make your final purchase.
