The Three Founding Sires Of Thoroughbred Racing

The Thoroughbred is the most well-known breed of racehorse in the world. Apart from racing, Thoroughbreds are also bred – with some strategic cross-breeding also involved – for show jumping, polo, hunting, combined training and dressage. They have also been cross-bred to improve the blood of other breeds, such as the Standardbred, the Quarter Horse, the Anglo Arabian and certain Warmblood breeds.

All the Thoroughbreds in Britain today can trace their ancestry back to the Three Foundation Sires brought to England from the Middle East between the late 1600s and early 1700s. These are the Godolphin Arabian(1729), Darley Arabian(1704), and the Byerley Turk(1680s). There are 74 Foundation mares who mated with the Foundation sires, and they came from a variety of breeds among England’s racing horses.

Byerley Turk was captured by Captain Robert Byerley at the 1686 Battle of Buda. In 1689, he was sent to Ireland with his master to be part of King William’s War, and they served in the Battle of Boyne as well. The horse is said to have been dark brown in color, with well-known Arabian features such as his arched neck, large eyes, and high-carried tail.

Byerley Turk traces his line to relatively few of today’s Thoroughbreds – 3.3% as opposed to the Godolphin Arabian’s 13.8% and the Darley Arabian’s 95%.

The Godolphin Arabian, also known as the Godolphin Barb, is named after his most famous owner, Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin. There is some controversy as to whether the Godolphin horse was actually an Arabian or a Barb, and this controversy continued to shroud him until his offspring Lath won the Queen’s Plate at the Newmarket races nine successive times. About fifteen hands high, this bay horse has seen its descendants mating with those of Byerley Turk and Darley Arabian to produce several winning Thoroughbreds through the years.

The Darley Arabian is the most famous and most important of the three Foundation Sires. He was a bay Arabian, bought in Syria in 1704 by Thomas Darley. From what information can be accessed, the Darley Arabian was a sight for sore eyes – beautiful and refined, and about 15 hands high.

Like both the other Foundation Sires – coincidentally enough – the Darley Arabian also saw his paternal line continued by one single descendant for four generations. In this case, the bearer of the line was the iconic Eclipse, who was Darley Arabian’s great-great-grandson. Recently, research has revealed that over 95% of today’s stallions have a Y-chromosome that is identical to the Darley Arabian.

Thoroughbreds are among the most famous, coveted and prized breeds of horses. They are known for their speed and agility on the track, and their “hot-blooded” temperament off it.

What makes the Thoroughbred special is the high percentage of Type IIa muscle fibers it carries. Type IIa muscle fibers generate great speed but also allow for endurance, which is why the Thoroughbred is as fast as the fastest and can still maintain its speed for considerable distances in horse races.

There’s a whole industry built on the sale of merchandise relating to sports; supporting your favourite team or sportsperson doesn’t just mean going to see them play and cheering them on, these days it means wearing the latest shirt, buying the latest products and generally looking like a walking billboard advertising your favourite team or player!

A lot of the merchandise on the market is not designed to last as a life long keep sake, it’s generally just junk that will end up cluttering up your house or loft before being thrown out because it’s outdated and useless.

But there are some dedicated fans out there who manage to avoid all the rubbish and concentrate on finding quality memorabilia that they can keep and enjoy forever.

Collecting memorabilia can be a hobby to some or a business opportunity to others. There is a huge business in tracking down signed items and then selling them on at a profit and people will pay a lot of money for a rare item or something signed by a particularly elusive star.

Collecting as a hobby can be as satisfying as any other pastime. The joy of finding that last piece to complete your collection or finally getting your hands on a coveted item is a great feeling!

Modern Oil Paintings

I have been buying modern oil paintings for a show in my gallery.  I have found many nice pieces.  I found a painting called Village in winter in a private collection in Illinois.  The artist was Fern Isabel Coppedge and she was an American.  I liked the piece because of the snowy scene.  It reminded me of my childhood.
While on a buying trip, I found Clouds Over Buckingham.  This was a really nice modern oil painting that was in a private collection in Pennsylvania.  I have seen work by this artist before and it always resells very well.
Buying modern oil paintings has taken me to various places across the United States.  I especially liked Main Line, Pennsylvania.  That is where I acquired Leaning Silo.  The artist of Leaning Silo was Arthur Meltzer.  I had been previously unfamiliar with him.
I enjoyed my trip to Long Island City.  I was buying modern oil paintings and found one from a French artist named Georges Antoine Rochegrosse that I really liked.  This painting was painted around 1900 and it was full of flowers.  I really liked it and think it will do well in the show.
I find that I can buy modern oil paintings very efficiently on the internet.  I found an art dealer in the United Kingdom that finds me some very nice items to show.  Recently, he sent me a painting of a nude beauty by British artist Allan Douglas Davidson.
The modern oil painting depicted a young Bohemian woman wearing only flowers in her hair.  She also has large gold earrings. She is posed against a dark background which highlights the perfection of her creamy skin.
The still life I recently acquired was so amazingly real looking.  This was one of the most beautiful modern oil paintings that I’ve found.  The detail was exceptional and the representation of the blooming rose was breathtaking.
I was so lucky when I found an original Max Ernst modern oil painting.  The title of the piece I found was Arizona Desert.  I really think it will do well in my show and I didn’t even pay half of what I think it is really worth.  It will make a great addition to someone’s collection.
I found a modern oil painting by the Spanish artist Grifoll that I liked.  I’m not sure how well this painting of a clown will sell, but I liked it and I think that there is bound to be someone who just can’t live without it.
I just adore paintings that depict Paris.  I don’t even care about the period or the style.  I was able to find a really nice modern oil painting by Edouard Cortes for my show.  The painting depicts flower vendors and a horse carriage.  I almost feel like I’m in turn of the century Paris when I look into it for a long time.
There are a lot of modern oil paintings that depict roses.  I plan to have a grouping of several at my show.  I was able to buy a painting by Theresa Bernstein called Roses that she painted in the 1940s.  She lived to be 111 years old and that is pretty amazing.
A popular theme among modern oil paintings is nautical.  I really do not like nautical paintings and don’t want them in my show.  I have had several friends implore me to change my mind.  I keep being told that I can’t possibly have a show of modern oil paintings that does not include a ship.
I had an assistant bring in a modern oil painting that had an interesting history.  It was more because of the history of the painting that I decided to hang it than because of its content.  The ship scene was really not to my liking, but I bought it anyway.
I have been looking for an antique street scene painted by Bettylane Resnik.  I saw a modern oil painting by her in an art catalog that depicted a really colorful street scene.  I can’t seem to find the current owner, but I’m trying.  I think that it would complete my show.

Organic Gardening Trend

Everything organic is gaining popularity these days and looking at the score of benefits that it offers, it is only good that it is becoming popular. Organic gardening and organic products are becoming almost mainstream wich render them cheaper to buy to the general public, and more people who by them, the more they are cheaper. There was a time when it was restricted to speciality stores and some posh grocery store. However, times have changed and these days you can find organic produce even in supermarkets.

Things are changing and so are the trends in foods. Organic foods are no longer too expensive to be affordable. With organic foods becoming more available, their consumption is also increasing. People are becoming increasingly aware of the advantages that organic gardening has on its surroundings and the health of their environment.

Greater awareness leads to an increased demand. The rise in demand leads to an increase in production. The increased production causes the organics to become more available in affordable prices. Low prices means more consumption and the cycle continues.

The 1990s saw a dramatic increase in the sale of organic products, as much as an increase of at least 20% each year. This increase caused the organics to sell well past $9 billion at the start of year 2000. The year 2006 saw at least 7 of 10 US consumers buying organic products.

The numbers are definitely encouraging and it is certainly good news that organic practices are going nowhere.

It was twenty years or even ten years ago, you might need an explanation to understand what organic actually means and why you see it on your food label. However, today almost anybody will understand that organic would be something that is grown while not using any artificial fertilizers, hormone supplements or pesticides.

When take a deeper insight into organics, then you realise that it is in fact, a system. It is more than a simple substitution of synthetics with natural. The basic principle of any organic system is to work inside the limits of nature in order to produce healthy food.

The primary focus is on the health of the soil. If the soil is healthy and rich in nutrients, it will produce healthy plants, which will be strong enough to resist pests and diseases.

Conventional methods would call for applying chemicals in order to treat disease or to control pests. However, organic methods would look at prevention by way to improving the soil. Instead of a quick chemical fix, organic methods opt for long term improvement of the soil.

The benefits are obvious. One is not requiring any re-entry interval. In other words, you do not need to wait before entering the growing area as farmers who use poisonous pesticides do.

The water sources remain pure and uncontaminated. The advantages are many.
