Coin collecting creates your own historical museum

Coin Collecting Creates Your Own Historical Museum

Want to build a valuable legacy over time?  Try looking in old homes, under that old dresser, or up in the attic where great grandma kept her things patiently waiting for you to unearth them.  It is not unlikely to find old coins there, a rare old coin that – at today’s rate – may be worth a few dollars; probably three or four or five, even ten times what the coin was worth back when great grandmother was collecting them.

Pennies, Nickels, Dimes & Quarters – Not Really Chump Change If They Are Rare

Ever find a silver looking penny? A shortage of copper during the year 1943 forced the government to mint all pennies at that time using steel. Because the copper was being used for bullet casings and electrical wire, steel pennies were circulated for three years, but if you find them now, snatch them for your collection.

A few Lincoln pennies were incorrectly minted on bronze that turned out to be blanks.  A few years – or decades later -these bronze pennies became a rarity and are valuable.  The steel ones though, because of their commonality, are worth only between one to three dollars each. Still, three dollars is not exactly something you should sneeze at.

As in all areas of society, coin collecting is also fraught with scams and fraudsters. Be careful not to be one of those gullible coin collectors who are sold coins that are copper plated in an attempt to make these pennies appear to be bronze.  Also, keep your guard up anytime someone offers you a circa 1943 penny made out of a metallic white alloy. Your best bet is to buy coins from reputable dealers and have the coins appraised to ensure you get the best value for your collection.

Coins – Age Makes Them Better

Coins, specifically the silver dollars made and circulated between the years 1878 and 1935, are worth between twelve dollars and twenty five dollars.  Uncirculated coins are worth considerably more. Often, especially today, the silver coins are placed in a plexiglass covering immediately upon being minted to keep them at their highest uncirculated value.

In fact, if you were to have collected one freshly minted silver dollar per month since 1970, you would have accumulated a small fortune today. Silver coins that have been graded by the three major firms in the industry can be worth significantly more than coins that are loose. Many collectors are opting for a steady collection of silver dollars each month as a hedge against inflation, as the coins will just become more valuable as the paper dollar loses value.

Quarters, Dimes & Half Dollars

If you find old quarters, dimes, or half  dollar coins made and circulated prior to 1965, you’ll find that these were usually made out of ninety percent silver! Because of this, they can be worth as much as today’s silver (with an additional premium, albeit small, put on the coin’s face value).

Miscued Means Moolah

A 1972 Lincoln penny on which the date and the letters appear to have been doubled is not a result of too many martinis!  These rare coins are currently worth about sixty dollars in standard circulated condition. The reason for the miscue is that the Philadelphia Mint accidentally misaligned the die used to mint the pennies, causing the portrait of Lincoln to look like it was doubled.  Because eighty thousand of these were circulated before the error was discovered, the value of these coins are incredible. Should you find one in close to perfect condition, you could be looking at close to a million dollars, because these are so rare.

As you can see, coin collecting is like collecting pieces of history and trivia from the past.  The face value of the coins is nothing compared to its worth as a storyteller – pennies, dimes, quarters, half dollars and silver dollars… these coins are often worth more once you have the story that went with it. As you grow a collection, you grow as the historian for your collection, like the curator of your own museum, and your collection just grows in value along with your legacy.

Depression glass collecting passion

Depression Glass Collecting Passion

Did your parents have a glass cabinet filled with treasured pieces of glass? If so, remember how they adored these special pieces? Did you inherit their eye for glass? During vacations or holidays, have you visited antique stores or second hand stores, looking for items that catch your eye? Maybe you just came across depression glass in your searches for exciting pieces of old glassware. Any one of these situations could describe how you developed a passion for collecting depression glass.

Once you decide to collect depression glass, where do you focus? There are hundreds of patterns. How do pick just one? How much money do you want to spend? What pieces do you really get excited about? Since depression glass was made during the 1920s and 1930s, how much is still left out there? There really are a ton of different collecting options. Time and money usually are the main limiting factors to collecting depression glass.

If money is not a limiting factor for you, now is a great time for collecting depression glass. Some people who have not been faring well financially are selling their personal collections, which may have taken them years to put together. Pieces that were once unaffordable are now much more reasonably priced. So, it is a great time to find and buy those typically more expensive pieces. Some collectors only buy rare pieces. Any rare pieces are a good investment, as they tend to hold their value.

Other collectors focus on specific pieces. Some collectors may target just tumblers, while others may focus on berry bowls. There is a rainbow of colors in depression glass patterns, so some collectors pick just one color, like the green Cherry Blossom pattern for their collection. Others like more color variety, and may focus on collecting a single item in one pattern, but buy that piece in every color that was made. For example, in the Royal Lace pattern, there are four different colored butter dishes. Another option is to look at the crispness of the imprinted pattern. Some patterns are more extravagant than others with sharper detail. In the Mayfair pattern, thick pieces have crisper patterns than the thin ones.

Availability plays a big part in the collecting world. If you want to collect every piece made in a pattern, you have limited possibilities. In the Doric pattern, pitchers are quite rare. You may be lucky to come across one every five years. Some patterns have pieces that are so rare that you may never find one. Thus, you may need to select a different pattern to collect if you want to acquire every piece. The number of pieces in a specific pattern should also be considered. The Cameo pattern contains a large number of pieces, while the Sunflower pattern contains only a few. No matter your preferences, the thrill of the search is part of the fun of collecting any depression glass pattern.

2.In a bowl of lukewarm water, dip the stamp facedown for a few minutes.
3.The stamp could detach from the envelope and sink.  Otherwise, gently peel it away using small tongs or tweezers.

Sonic the hedgehog a hero for the bit generation

Sonic the Hedgehog- A Hero for the 16-Bit Generation

It has been nearly twenty years since Sonic the Hedgehog made jaws drop and the world take notice. After getting battered by Nintendo and their stocky Italian plumber, Sega knew it would need a character that could sell a million copies. The company had been struggling for a long time to develop a character that would resonate with video game fans the way Mario had.

People often forget that Mario’s first adventure was not Super Mario Bros. Before that game ever came out, he was striving to release the damsel-in-distress in the famous Donkey Kong series. It was only a matter of time before he made the leap to an adventure of his own.

And what an adventure it was!

Since its release over 25 years ago, it has sold well over 40 million copies. Sega had never experienced anything like it, and if they could produce something with just a shade of that star-power, it would make them a major player and competitor in the video game industry.

Unfortunately, their mascot, Alex Kidd, wasn’t going to cut it. They needed something fresh and original that would dazzle the eye and make full use of their developing technologies.

As the eighties became the nineties, it was officially time to put away the past. That meant saying goodbye to the Sega Master System and the 8-bit fun of the Reagan era, and hello to something more powerful and advanced.

Hello, Sega Genesis!

But if Sega was going to make a splash with their new 16-bit system, they would need a character and a game that would really show what the technology could do. Coinciding with the 8-bit version, which was the last release of the Sega Master System, the Sega Genesis boasted a new creation: a furry blue hedgehog that could zip and roll and move about the screen.

He could run fast and buzz through rollercoaster-like loops, collecting coins, defeating villains, obtaining the power of the Chaos Emeralds, and ultimately locking horns with the all-powerful Dr. Robotnik, who floated and hovered and trounced around in his diabolical machines with every intention of committing grievous bodily harm to his adversary.

Sonic the Hedgehog for the 16-bit Sega Genesis system was a marvel. It boasted the most advanced graphics of its day. It demonstrated quick, fast-paced gameplay, with slopes, loops, drops, and springs, all designed to advance you through the stages as quickly as possible. While most gamers were not used to the intensity, it proved to be an exhilarating experience that was challenging, yet at the same time, easy to pick up,

Each of the six worlds had three acts, and offered a unique design, intricate in details and color schemes. From the beauties of South Island to the dangers of Dr. Robotnik’s industrial hazards, Sonic the Hedgehog flies at his own pace, testing each mission with the hope of wrestling control away from Dr. Robotnik and his minions of evil.

To date, it has sold over 4 million copies, spawning an even more successful sequel for the Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as well as an array of other characters and adventures across the industry and spilling out into other media.

Sega wanted a hero that could deliver. In Sonic the Hedgehog, they got him!
